Thanks for the Lullaby, Mary Tyler Moore

parenting, R.I.P., TV

About the only songs I know word-for-word are TV theme songs of the 1970s, and so for the past 10 years, “Love Is All Around” has been in heavy rotation as a bedtime lullaby.

Mary Tyler Moore didn’t write it, but she and her iconic TV series are the reasons I sing it.

Moore died today at age 80. Here’s a piece I wrote for Yahoo! on her life and career, which was influential beyond The Mary Tyler Moore Show. And bedtime lullabies.

cape

“The ‪‎cape‬ is a start, but we need ‪turtlenecks‬. On cold awards-show nights, I call on actors of the female persuasion to go with more capes and ‪pockets‬–but really more jackets and turtlenecks.” Me, slightly paraphrasing me on the latest ‪Joal Ryan Thing podcast‬.

batman

As an added bonus, I commemorate Tuesday’s 50th anniversary of the premiere of the 1966-1968 Adam WestBurt Ward TV series, Batman, with a discussion with comic-book writer Jim Beard, editor of the anthology, Gotham City 14 Miles: 14 Essays on Why the 1960s Batman TV Series Matters.

high castle

My holiday present to you: a listicle! Specifically, 12 random and arbitrary pop-culture things I’m looking forward to in 2016. Somehow, Rizzoli & Isles is discussed, as is my totally exclusive finding that Robert Redford will be way older in the new Pete’s Dragon than Mickey Rooney was in the old Pete’s Dragon.

And, yes, I know we don’t yet know when The Man in the High Castle will be back with new, season-two episodes, but I can hope it’ll be in 2016.

Oh, and happy new year and all that.
