Latest Podcast: Hitler, Mussolini, Zac Hanson, the Kardashians

Books, Dictators, Kardashians, one direction, Podcast, pop culture, Zac Hanson

Jay Nordlinger, senior editor of National Review, virtually stops by to discuss his new book, Children of Monsters: An Inquiry into the Sons and Daughters of Dictators (Encounter Books)—and I promise, you will not be wondering why I’m not discussing One Direction.

Because, you know, in between talking Hitler, Pol Pot and Mussolini, I’ll be name-checking One Direction, as well as the Kardashians, Zac Hanson and Batman’s Bob Kane.

Trust me, it all works.

Latest Podcast: Shameless Clickbait Edition with Bette Davis’ 4th Husband

Gary Merrill, Hollywood, JC Chasez, one direction, Podcast, Shawn Mendes, Teen idols, Zayn Malik

merrillIf you can get past the Gary Merrill centennial ploy, then there’s also thoughtful discussion of Zayn Malik‘s stated desire to make “#realmusic,” the industriousness behind the insta-covers of “Drag Me Down” (originally recorded, natch, by Malik’s ex-bandmates from One Direction) and the reality that no matter how young and happening you are you will one day be replaced by your replacement, who may, in fact, be born the very day you are at the height of your youth and happening-ness. (Exhibit A: JC Chasez and Shawn Mendes.)

Latest Podcast: Why Every Under-30 Hollywood Actress Should Heed This Anniversary*

Bobbi Kristina, Duggar Family, Louis Tomlinson, one direction, Podcast, R.I.P., Teen idols

bowClara Bow would’ve turned 110* on Wednesday. For a time, the original “It” girl was the biggest movie star in all the world. Then she turned almost 30, and her run was done. For various reasons, sure, but let’s not pretend her advanced age wasn’t one of them.

Bobbi Kristina Brown, Louis Tomlinson and the “heartbreak” of the post-TV Duggar family are also discussed.

Also, here’s a link to the next-to-latest latest podcast. I neglected to post it earlier, and for that I am sorry. (If you listen, you’ll know I’m am often sorry.)

* Note: The headline and Bow’s birthday have been corrected to reflect my realization that 2015 minus 1905 equals 110, not 100. Math be hard.

Latest Podcast: Boy Bands, Boy Bands, Boy Bands, Plus Mariel Hemingway, Woody Allen and “Scott Pilgrim”

Backstreet Boys, Child Stars, Justin Bieber, Nick Jonas, one direction, Podcast, Teen idols, Zayn Malik

malikLook, I didn’t make Zayn Malkin leave One Direction. I just have to talk about it when it happens. I also didn’t make Justin Bieber, Nick Jonas and the Backstreet Boys all make news in the same week. They just did.

I did, however, come up with an argument as to why Scott Pilgrim vs. the World is a morally superior film to Woody Allen‘s (and Mariel Hemingway‘s) Manhattan. I did that all on my own.

Special-Edition Podcast: One Direction, Zayn Malik and the Inevitable Direction of (Almost) All Pop-Idol Acts

Music, one direction, Podcast, Teen idols

fourOnce upon a time, I covered a Spice Girls concert shortly after Ginger Spice (Geri Halliwell) had departed the act. It was weird, and I wasn’t even 11. Imagine if you were 11, and you had no idea how the pop-idol song ended.

Now imagine how One Direction fans feel with the news that one of their beloved, Zayn Malik, has departed the group’s current world tour.

So, be nice to the 11-year-olds out there today.

And also listen to a special-edition of Former Child Star Central podcast that has been convened to discuss pop idols, expiration dates and One Direction.
