Someone has to think the big thoughts about the Love Bug franchise, and in honor of the last film’s 10th anniversary, I do so on the latest podcast episode of The Joal Ryan Thing.
Confirmation bias, sexism and Herbie Goes Bananas are discussed.
No to be be spoiler-y, but I announce and indeed confirm that Herbie: Fully Loaded is way better than Herbie Goes Bananas.
A judgmental question, to be sure, but I promise I’m not judging who you think I’m judging.
Let’s rewind.
Lindsay Lohan is off probation. That’s the good news.
The bad news is Lohan was in and out of court—and on probation—for nearly all of her 20s. Next month, in fact, she turns 29, which is terribly close to 30, which is roughly five years too old for women seeking jobs in Hollywood. I exaggerate, of course. But not by much. (See: Maggie Gyllenhaal revealing that, at age 37, she was deigned “too old” to play an on-screen love interest to an unnamed 55-year-old male star.)

Name change or no, the podcast remains a pop-culture smorgasbord of discussion about child stars, teen idols and other human beings.
The latest episode is up, and it’s fantastic. The Sprouse twins (Cole and Dylan), the Olsen twins (Mary-Kate and Ashley), Tatum O’Neal, the late Terry Sue-Patt, the nonsense Poltergeist “curse” and the concept of Lindsay Lohan Time are covered.
Because you presumably can’t hit a major-league curve. I’ll give you that. Not that I’ve tried, but I’m betting I can’t hit a major-league curve, either. (Now a nasty slider…)
The larger, less-literal point I make in the latest episode of Former Child Star Central is that Alex Rodriguez, the baseball star-turned-scored PED user-turned baseball star anew, is doing something that Justin Bieber, the pop star-turned-joke, should do. (Hint: It’s not getting kicked out of Coachella.)
Elsewhere, I invent the Former Child Star Central Book Club, and highly recommend that Lindsay Lohan heed its first selection, Amber Tamblyn‘s Dark Sparkler.
